TikTok Expands Platform Tools with New Parental Controls, Creator Features, and Digital Wellbeing Support

TikTok parental controls just got a major upgrade. This week, TikTok announced a new suite of features focused on parental control, creator tools, and digital wellbeing, marking one of the platform’s most significant shifts in platform responsibility and transparency to date.

Let’s dive into the major changes TikTok users,  and especially parents, creators, and digital wellness advocates,  can expect to see in the coming weeks.

TikTok Parental Controls in Family Pairing: What’s New?

TikTok’s Family Pairing feature now includes new tools to give parents greater control and transparency over their teens’ experience on the app. The updates include:

  • Account Blocking: Parents can now block specific accounts from interacting with their teens. Blocked users will be unable to view the teen’s content, send them messages, or appear in their feed.
  • Upload Notifications: Parents will receive alerts when their teen posts a public video, story, or image. TikTok says this is designed to promote informed parenting without intruding on teen creativity.
  • Privacy Visibility: Parents can now view certain privacy settings chosen by their teens (ages 16–17). This includes whether the teen allows downloads of their videos or whether their follower list is visible to others.

These changes aim to strike a balance between youth independence and parental oversight, a long-running concern on the platform.

Powerful New Creator Tools

TikTok is introducing a number of new features designed to give creators more control over their content, engagement, and audience interaction:

Creator Care Mode

This new feature automatically filters comments deemed offensive, profane, or inappropriate. The filtering is powered by AI that adapts to the creator’s own behavior. For instance, if a creator frequently deletes or reports specific types of comments, the system will proactively suppress similar comments in the future.

Custom Comment Controls for TikTok Live

For live broadcasts, creators now have access to a tool that allows them to block specific words from their comment section. Users who use the blocked words,  even retroactively,  will be automatically muted for a set period of time chosen by the creator.

New Creator Inbox Experience

To help creators manage their direct messages more efficiently, TikTok is rolling out a revamped inbox feature called the Creator Inbox. This inbox includes:

  • “Unread” and “Starred” tabs
  • Custom Responses: Creators can save answers to frequently asked questions.
  • Quick Reply Tools: One-tap access to pre-saved responses for easier communication.

Creator Chat Rooms

TikTok has officially launched its version of broadcast channels, called Creator Chat Rooms. These allow creators to:

  • Share exclusive updates
  • Promote events and content
  • Request feedback from fans

Eligible creators must:

  • Be over 18
  • Have at least 5,000 followers
  • Be part of either Subscriptions or Live Fan Club

Each Creator Chat Room can host up to 300 members, and creators can manage up to 20 active chats.

Content Check Lite and Content Check

Aimed at transparency, the Content Check Lite tool lets creators see whether their videos are eligible for TikTok’s For You Page (FYP) before posting. This helps prevent post-upload surprises and gives creators time to make adjustments.

TikTok is also testing a broader Content Check feature, which analyzes whether a video violates community guidelines before it’s published.

Boosting Digital Wellbeing: Well-being Missions

TikTok is addressing digital wellness in a new, gamified way. The platform has introduced Well-being Missions, which consist of:

  • Short quizzes
  • Interactive flash cards
  • Habit-building tools

Users earn badges as they complete the missions. The aim is to nudge users toward healthier screen time habits and a more mindful relationship with the app.

In addition, TikTok is building a dedicated digital wellbeing experience within the app. This space will offer:

  • Breathing exercises
  • Calming audio tools
  • Screen time insights

These tools are designed to help users unwind and reduce overconsumption, echoing broader industry trends toward user care and sustainability.

Footnotes Fact-Checking Launch

In tandem with these feature releases, TikTok has also officially launched Footnotes, its own crowdsourced fact-checking system for videos,  similar to Community Notes on X or Meta’s Notes system.

The rollout marks a strategic step in TikTok’s efforts to counter misinformation. The company says that Footnotes is an expansion, not a replacement, of its existing Global Fact-checking Program, which involves more than 20 IFCN-accredited organizations.

Final Thoughts: A Platform in Evolution

With this wave of features, TikTok is making a strong play to improve user trust, parental confidence, and creator satisfaction. The platform’s latest direction reflects the broader tech trend: building healthier, safer, and more transparent digital ecosystems.

Whether these new controls and wellbeing tools will be enough to satisfy watchdogs and lawmakers remains to be seen. But for the millions of teens, creators, and daily scrollers on TikTok, these updates offer new ways to enjoy the app,  with just a bit more control and care.
